Websites that are being ranked and found on the first few pages of the search engine's results would have thousands, if not, millions of back links behind them. So, what are backlinks? Actually, these are just links that come from other sites and are being directed to your website, and they are often referred to as Inlinks. Having many back links will let search engines determine the value and the popularity of your website - - top search results are even more popular than those other websites with the same or similar content. These back links can also be considered as the footsteps that will lead people to your site, and these footsteps are what the search engines be looking for when they rank your page.

If you try searching for the keywords like water, molecules, business, internet or other very general keywords, you will most likely get the first result on the search engines directed to wikipedia. This is mainly because this site has like 4 million back links in Yahoo and about 16,400 in Google. Every single day, the links to this site are greatly increasing; this is because webmasters continue to link their content to this site. The more websites that fetch content from this site, the more backlinks they will get.

Now, the question would be, "Do I really need back links?" Well, the answer to that would be "NO", but if you want that your website gets to the top pages of search engines, then why not get back links to your site. But if you want to and you must position your website on the top search pages of a search engine, then you need to outpace the number of back links other websites have. If they currently have millions, then you will have to make your numbers double. This is how important inlinks are.

How can you get these links? There are actually several ways to increase the back links of your website, but the main factor is authority. For other people to recognize your website, you have to be an expert on the theme of your own website. People will surely follow and visit your website more often, once they know that it contains reliable information and has clear and accurate information.

Submission of articles, directory submission and social bookmarking are just some of the many ways for one to increase the number of the site's back links. The most effective and easiest way would be joining forums.
