Back in the early eighties there were few people who would have predicted the rise of the mobile phone. Picturing almost everyone walking around with a mobile phone in their hand or pocket was something that nobody could do. But today most people do indeed have their own mobile phone and picturing a world with no mobiles at all is something that most young people cannot do. Even if you visit the poorest and most remote parts of the world you are still likely to see people with mobile phones.
And what is most amazing is that this rise from no mobiles to everyone having them has happened in a little over two decades. That is why it has become really interesting to wonder what the future will be like. Technology is moving so fast; will we still be using mobile phones in another decade.
Every time a new device is introduced onto the market there seem to be significant changes to what we are used to. They have gone from just being something to phone and text with to being complete entertainment stations. We can now surf the web, write emails, update our social media profiles, watch movies, listen to music, take photos, play games, and even write work assignments all from our phones.
In fact there has to be a time soon when we stop referring to them as mobile phones at all because this is only one of the many functions. The advances over the last decade have been so great that one has to wonder what the next ten years will bring.
Thinking about this is actually very exciting. I confidently predict that the words 'mobile phone' will sound completely out-of-date by 2020 - we will look upon it as we now look upon a Walkman. Maybe by 2020 the way mobile technology will be sold will be in the form of jewellery. It is sort of hard to imagine how the things are going to advance but the only certain thing is that they are sure to do so.
