This has become the most common option available for Web Hosting. Shared hosting refers to the arrangement whereby a business supplies servers for use by multiple clients websites and to whom use of that server is offered for a fee. This means that one server can end up being responsible for hundreds of websites all at once.

Shared Hosting has many advantages. It is the cheapest form of commercial Hosting, as the cost of the server can be offset by the many customers who can use it at once. These customers will not have to have any in depth technical knowledge as they will only have to be able to administrate the account- in essence it divorces them from the physical server. When you buy into shared hosting, you'll also be given support from the hosting company, guarantees for operational time, a contract, and more.

There are also some downsides that should be noted, though, primarily that you are actually sharing the server's resources so this can adversely affect some performance. Keep in mind a server, like your PC at home, has a limited amount of CPU, memory, and disk space available and if the Web Host has too many folks on the server, or it's being used heavily by some customers, or if the server isn't that fast to start with - - your website might ultimately suffer and more more slowly.

Using shared hosting options may also prevent you from using some of the more high-tech, advanced features which a dedicated server can offer you. You also are faced with a bit of increase for security risks because you can never know exactly how secure your various "neighbors" are, but keep in mind the server is secured well to start with and the possible risk is not something to be overly concerned about.

For the majority of users and websites, Shared Hosting is the perfect answer to the needs. In most cases, the only people that will not work well in a shared hosting situation are those who just want to have their own server, or those who need to have complete control over the contents hosted on the server.
