For the duration of this piece we will be carefully taking a deeper look at the rich history of data storage. We are going to cover all of the popular forms of storage that have been available to people, throughout the history of the computer. Some younger people might not be very familiar with the earliest forms of technology that we'll be discussing, but that's the point of reading this.

The first and most popular way to store any form of computerized data was through the use of an invention called a density disc. As they grew in popularity they soon became called floppy disks because of their flexible nature. The first ever floppies were up to eight inches in size and were introduced for the first time in the 1970's. They held under ninety kilobytes of storage.

The first type of floppy disc's that grew in popularity with the creation of the personal computer were the five and a quarter sized disc's. These disc's were often used to store the operating system as well because hard drives were not as available and far too expensive for most consumers. Some of these disc's could store of to three hundred and sixty kilobytes. We weren't yet up to half a megabyte yet.

The third kind of floppy was the last type of popular density disc before the technology fell out of use because of the invention of more efficient mediums. This floppy was three and a quarter inches in size and was only used to store some software as well as personal files because hard drives had become affordable by this point and we very commonly being used for not only operating systems but storing other things as well.

It is very important to remember that hard drives from over a decade ago were a lot more crude in nature than what we have available to us today. A hard drive from the mid to late nineties that was 4 gigs in size, was considered to be quite an acceptable sized hard drives. Cd's made optical discs a popular form of storage and they beat out floppies for the storage of software.

There are many hard drives on the market of today, that are capable of storing thousands of gigs at a time! They come in models that are not internal to the PC. These are called external hard drives and they are quite popular. The popularity of the external hard drive grew into the very small, key chain sized, product known as the flash drive. These are very popular among college kids.

It is very important to also note that the optical form of storage has become so very popular with consumers that the technology to not only read but also write to it has become common place within most homes. People use a laser to burn information on everything from Cd's to blu-rays. Large web networks are sometimes used by companies to store files via the web.

After taking a moment to consider the complete history of data storage, you might appreciate the technology that we today just a little more. Today optical discs can store a quarter of a terabyte at a time while the first floppies couldn't even hold an entire tenth of one megabyte.
